second child

As I was randomly browsing the internet for interesting blogs, I came across this article with the title – 10 Signs You’re Ready For Another Child. I’ve been thinking of baby number 2 since Lauren was about 10 months old. I didn’t want her to have a big age gap with her little brother or sister. But I have never given any thoughts on whether I was ready or not. It was simply ‘Hey, Lauren is almost one year old and having two years age gap between siblings would be nice. So let’s start baking!’

Here is my response to the 10 signs as I go through each point on the list. Let’s see if I pass:

1. When you see a newborn baby you think “Aww, how sweet!” not “Wow, that’s a lot of work!”

When I see a newborn, I think “Oh! Lauren has grown so much since” I miss Lauren at that age. So I Pass!

2. The idea of changing diapers again conjures up nostalgia not nausea.
I’m still changing Lauren’s diapers, so no nostalgic feelings from me. Nausea or not, I still got to do it. Fail?

3. You walk through the baby clothes section of a store just because.
A must visit whenever I go into a store now. Pass!
4. You fall asleep at night dreaming up baby names.
Nick and I have not stopped picking out names since I was pregnant with Lauren. We still can’t agree on a single boy’s name. Luckily Lauren turned out to be a girl. So pass!
5. You feel a pang of jealousy when you find out a close friend is pregnant.
Nope. I am thrilled for Lauren to have playmates her age! Fail but really, I don’t see why I should be jealous.
6. You nix your hubby’s idea of turning the extra bedroom into a man cave.
I really don’t mind if he wants a man cave. I want one for myself too. Fail.
7. Your ears perk up when a baby product recall is announced.
Oh..yes I do. Pass.
8. Sleepless nights seem like a small price to pay.
Still going through sleepless nights every now and then because Lauren is teething. It is the worst. HATE. Fail.
9. Your 3-year-old is starting to look like she’s ready for college.
Mine is only 1 year old. And I don’t even understand this point. Someone please clarify for me, please? Fail?

10. The thought of giving up wine doesn’t seem like such a big sacrifice.
Yup, wouldn’t mind at all because I don’t really drink. I would be sad to bid sashimi and sushi goodbye though. Half point.

Total score: 4.5/10

Truth be told, I am probably not ready to have another baby. But then again, neither was I when I was pregnant with Lauren. We can never be truly ready for parenthood, or another child, or another 2 more. This list is a fun gauge to start the thinking process but as every parent knows, when it comes to the decision of having children, it is not 100% logical or rational.

want to have second child

We choose to have children because it feels right. It feels right for me to have another child. It feels right that  Lauren have a sibling and if it feels right, why wait?
