3rd Pregnancy Update: Second Trimester

PREGNANCY | 8 comments

Second trimester, the best time of the entire pregnancy. The relief from nausea, the bout of energy, and the guiltless midnight cakes with a side of cheese on toast. The visible proof of pregnancy is good too. People are finally offering seats and opening doors; I’ll take all pleasantness reserved for expecting moms anytime!

Most women begin shopping and getting prepared for baby arrival around this time. Not me though. Instead of setting up baby nursery, I nest by creating and organizing business automation systems, email sequences, templates and writing blog posts to be published during my absence.

There is still so much to do. Almost 5 more months to go. Hustle time!

How far along: 19 weeks and 6 days.

Baby size: According to pregnancy sites, it’s now the size of a mango but who cares. He/She (we are keeping the gender a surprise this time around!) is growing well. According to the detailed scan today, it is 300g now.

Weight gain: I lost weight in the first trimester. Last month I gained 2kg but this month I’ve only gained 0.3kg, bringing my weight back up to 54.6kg.

Maternity clothes: I’m kinder to myself this time around and didn’t try to squeeze into any tight clothing. I’ve been living in loose maxi dresses for the past 2 weeks and I envision the trend to continue until the baby is ready to come out.

Sleep: This has been the physically hardest pregnancy so far, but the sleep is great. I’m so tired by the time I get to sleep every night, I fall asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow. I have vivid, interesting dreams every night… until Lauren climbs into our bed and tries to dig her way back into my tummy.

Food cravings: I had intense cravings for hot and sour food in the first trimester. Think kimchi, tom yum soup….hmmm, tom yum soup… It has eased up a little by now. I’m still craving mangoes, more specifically the green, sour kind. I eat it straight up with a dash of salt.

Symptoms: My varicose veins are worse than ever. The swell and the level of pain I experience right now is similar to when I was almost ready to give birth to Georgia. It is getting subsequently worse with each pregnancy. Doctor advised that I wear compression stocking whenever I can, although he doubt that the store-bought kind would be of much help. If it gets worse, I will have to see a physiotherapist to get one made to my measurements. Till then, feet up or get moving.
