SELF CARE | 13 comments

You take good care of your cosmetics and you start your makeup routine with a clean face. But when was the last time you clean your makeup tools? Keeping the tools clean is important. Here you will learn effective tricks and tips how to provide proper cleaning of your makeup sponges, makeup brushes, hairbrushes and metal tools. The following guide to cleaning makeup tools will help you maintain your beauty items in hygienic condition.

Your guide to cleaning makeup tools

Cleaning Makeup Brushes

1. First, you should rinse the bristled part of the brushes with warm water. Be careful not to moisten the base of the brushes which will spoil the glue and make the brushes to fall to pieces and decrease their lifespan.
2. Clean the bristles well with a baby or other mild shampoo. Apply shampoo to create foam and rinse as many times as necessary. In the end, make sure the water for rinsing runs clear.
3. Create a disinfecting solution. Mix vinegar and water in a 1:2 ratio using a shallow bowl. Dip the bristled parts of the brushes in the bowl and let them soak for 1-2 minutes. Again be careful not to moisten the base of the brushes and their handles. Then rinse with running water.
4. Let the makeup brushes lay flat on a dry clean towel for one night to dry completely after reshaping their bristles.
5. Repeat the steps from 1 to 4 once every two weeks for each makeup brush you use. This way bacteria and germs will be kept away from your brushes and skin.

Cleaning Makeup Sponges

1. First you should wet the sponges under running warm water.
2. With a gentle soap or mild shampoo clean the dirt from the sponges creating foam.
3. Then you should rinse the sponges until the water becomes clear.
4. Use a towel to dry the sponges and leave them to air dry.
5. Repeat the mentioned above steps once every several uses of the sponges. They should be kept clean and rinsed with warm water to kill the germs.

Cleaning Hair Brushes

1. Remove as many hairs as you can from the bristles using a toothpick, tiny comb or fingers.
2. Soak the brush in a cleaning solution. Prepare it by filling a bowl with water and adding several drops of any clarifying shampoo. Soak plastic hair brushes in this solution for 3 to 5 minutes. If the brush you use has fabric head don’t soak it only dip its bristles a few times. Don’t throw away the soapy solution.
3. Use the soapy solution to scrub your hair brushes with an unused toothbrush. Dip the toothbrush in the solution and apply it to scrub the hair brushes and make them like new. In the end, rinse well with water.
4. Let the brush dry by placing it with the bristles face down on a dry clean towel for one night.
CityCleaners Battersea suggests repeating the steps above to wash your brushes once in the month.

Cleaning Metal Beauty Tools

1. Wash your tweezers, eyebrow trimmers, eyelash curlers, cuticle nippers and nail clippers with water and any antibacterial soap. Use a clean towel to pat dry.
2. Use a cotton ball that has been soaked in alcohol to cleanse the tool wiping it on each side. Let the tool dry several minutes. If the tool gets in contact with your face skin use water to rinse it. You don’t need to rinse the nail tools. Carefully dry with a towel.
3. Metal beauty tools should be washed with soap and water after every use. If you can’t provide their cleaning this often repeats the first two steps once every two weeks. Keep your metal tools in clean containers.
