The Best Camera for a Mummy Blogger

LIFESTYLE, TRAVEL

the chill mom

Every now and then, people ask me which camera I use to take the photos for this blog and my Instagram account. While I’m no expert on camera and the specs and all, I’m pretty happy with my Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III. I take most of my indoor and travel photos with it, and ALL of the videos you see on my Instagram feed and YouTube channel since last year, are shot with the camera.

Here are some of the reasons why I like my Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III:

It’s compact and it looks good

This is very, very important. Nick and I had a proper DSLR before, but the amount of time we’ve actually used it can be counted with one hand. I’m not kidding. It’s too bulky and heavy for us to lug around. My hands get tired just holding it up.

The Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III is super light and compact. It fits perfectly into the palm of my hand, which means I can snap a photo easily even when my other hand is occupied (more often than not, holding the hand of one of my children).

It looks good too and I don’t mind it hung on my shoulder or my neck when we travel. For its size, it’s a really powerful camera.

It has many functions yet so easy to use

Sure, you can go fully manual like setting your own shutter speed and aperture or leave one or the other on auto mode, but I just love to use the scene (SCN) setting. All I have to do is pick the screen – like People (for portraits) or Indoors – and the camera does all the work of adjusting the setting for me. Another scene setting which I use very often is the motion setting. It takes crystal clear shots of my kids in action!

It has a tiltable Touch Screen LCD

It’s super easy to use. It allows me to quickly and accurately focus on my child’s face with a tap on the touch screen.

The tiltable LCD screen comes in handy when I need to capture an image at my child’s eye level without lowering myself on the floor.

Fast shutter speed

Look at me! I’m actually using a proper photography term! Hahaha… It’s true though. One of the best features of the camera is its super fast shutter speed and auto-focus, so no problems when you need to capture a moment quickly. I find it very useful to capture kids’ unexpected antics.

Capturing better photos

While my iPhone has served me well enough, there are many limitations. I couldn’t get good photos when shooting indoors and low lights, which happens most of the time when you’re trying to get photos of your children in their most natural habitat. The pictures would either be grainy or blurry. I wanted great pictures, so a good camera is necessary.

The Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III‘s high-speed sensor and image processor helps me to capture crisp, clear images with amazing resolution and accurate colour, in any situation – indoor, outdoor and even when I’m on the move.

The OI.Share app is amazing!

What about those self-portrait shots, I hear you ask? I took those by myself too.

I can connect my phone to my camera via its own wifi (meaning I don’t need to go somewhere with wifi connection or use my phone data). I use the OI.Share app for wireless control for family/self-portraits and easily transfer the photos taken onto my phone to share on social media!

Silent Shutter mode

Need to take photos in quiet environments like in the library or during school performance, but hate the “chik chak, chik chak” camera snapping sound? This camera comes in a silent shutter mode which does just that. Utter silence when you snap a shot!

It takes great videos

Since I got the camera, I use it to film all of my YouTube and Instagram videos too. Its built-in 5-axis image stabilisation is great for motion recording so I will no longer have shaky videos. It also captures the even the smallest details in 4K quality. The camera refocuses very quickly which means when a subject moves, there won’t be any blurry moment in the video due to the time taken to refocus.

If you want to check out some of the videos I recorded using the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III, go here and here.

I could also record small clips and the camera could stitch it all up at a touch of a button. It turns the clips into a mini video completes with smooth transitions between clips and background music.

All in all, I must say that the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III is a family-friendly camera. There are MANY more wonderful functions which I haven’t fully explored with this one. One of these days I’m going to buckle down and walk myself through some tutorials. And take my photos to another level. And and and and AND. 😀
